Zhang Zhao (166–236) was a statesman and scholar who served as a key advisor to Sun Quan, the ruler of Eastern Wu during the late Eastern Han and Three Kingdoms period. Originally serving Sun Quan’s father, Sun Ce, he played a crucial role in shaping the administration and governance of Wu, advocating for stability and legal reforms. His wisdom and integrity earned him Sun Quan’s trust, and he was instrumental in persuading him to declare independence from the Han and establish the state of Wu.

Despite his loyalty, Zhang Zhao sometimes clashed with Sun Quan over policy decisions, particularly regarding military campaigns and the appointment of officials. He opposed excessive warfare, emphasizing internal development and governance over territorial expansion. His contributions laid the foundation for Eastern Wu’s administrative structure, and he was widely respected for his intellect and moral uprightness.
