The original Lich King was created by Kil'jaeden the Deceiver, who bound the spirit of the orc shaman Ner'zhul to the Frozen Throne as part of the Burning Legion's plan to weaken Azeroth in preparation for its invasion. Armed with Frostmourne, the Lich King eventually broke free from Kil'jaeden’s control and merged with the human prince Arthas Menethil, becoming one of Azeroth’s most formidable and infamous threats.
