Zhang Liao (張遼), courtesy name Wenyuan (文遠), was a distinguished general serving under the warlord Cao Cao during the late Eastern Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period. Originally a subordinate of Lü Bu, he surrendered to Cao Cao after Lü Bu’s defeat in 198 CE and quickly proved his exceptional military prowess. Zhang Liao played a key role in numerous battles, demonstrating both strategic brilliance and personal valor. His loyalty and effectiveness earned him a high position within Cao Cao’s forces, and he became one of the Five Elite Generals of Wei (五子良將).
