Emperor Taizong of Tang

S$128.00

Emperor Taizong of Tang (Li Shimin) was the second emperor of the Tang dynasty, ruling from 626 to 649. He played a crucial role in the dynasty’s founding by helping his father, Emperor Gaozu, overthrow the Sui dynasty. His reign, known as the "Reign of Zhenguan," is considered a golden age in Chinese history. Taizong strengthened the imperial examination system and emphasized policies over personal loyalty to reduce corruption.

Under his rule, the Tang dynasty expanded its territory, covering regions in modern-day Korea, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Central Asia. He defeated the Eastern Turks in 630, making Tang China the dominant power in East and Central Asia. His military campaigns also led to the annexation of key oasis states in the Tarim Basin. Taizong was a rationalist who rejected superstition and focused on practical governance. He valued criticism, employed capable chancellors, and sought to balance absolute power with effective rule. His leadership laid the foundation for the Tang dynasty’s peak under Emperor Xuanzong.
