King David

David was the second king of the united kingdom of ancient Israel and Judah and the founder of the Judaean dynasty, uniting all the tribes of Israel under a single monarchy. His reign laid the foundation for the empire later expanded by his son, Solomon.

David is best known for his extraordinary feats, including killing the Philistine giant Goliath with a slingshot and a single stone, and for his devotion to God, famously expressed through his harp-playing and the writing of psalms. A skilled warrior and leader, David achieved numerous victories against the Philistines, which earned him great fame but also provoked the jealousy of King Saul. In one instance, Saul attempted to kill David by hurling a spear at him.

Despite Saul’s hostility, David remained loyal and even married Saul’s daughter, Michal, after fulfilling Saul’s unusual demand of presenting the foreskins of 100 Philistines—a feat David successfully accomplished. David's life and legacy are marked by his complex character, his devotion to God, and his pivotal role in shaping the history of ancient Israel.
