Cheng Yu

Cheng Yu (程昱) was a prominent military strategist and politician during the late Eastern Han Dynasty, best known for his service under the warlord Cao Cao. Born in 141 CE, Cheng Yu initially served as a local official before recognizing Cao Cao’s potential and joining his cause. His keen tactical mind played a crucial role in Cao Cao’s rise to power, particularly in advising defensive strategies and military campaigns against rival warlords like Lü Bu and Yuan Shao.

One of Cheng Yu’s most notable contributions was his foresight in the Battle of Guandu (200 CE), where he advocated for a defensive stance that ultimately led to Cao Cao’s decisive victory over Yuan Shao. Known for his sharp intellect and unwavering loyalty, he continued to serve the Cao Wei state even after Cao Cao’s death, aiding his successor Cao Pi. Though often overshadowed by other strategists like Guo Jia and Xun Yu, Cheng Yu’s insights and unwavering support solidified his legacy as one of Cao Cao’s most reliable advisors.
